With the Regional Finals/State Quarterfinals coming up, thought I'd throw a few nuggets out there for my fans. Yes, all 2 of you enjoy it.
* Games are normally played on Friday's early on in the playoffs (normally including this week), however with a few quirks in the schedule, Appomattox will be playing their 3rd Saturday playoff game in their last 4. An opening week playoff loss to Lee last year, followed by an opening week playoff win against Lee this year, and then they will host Greg Mance & The Blue Tornado of Richlands on Saturday at Bragg Stadium.
* Salem & Jefferson Forest should feel encouraged. The Amherst Lancers who fell to both teams during the regular season (and then Salem again in the playoffs), have fallen in the regular season for 4 consecutive years to teams that have won the State Championship. Lake Taylor (2014), Northside (2013), Brookville (2012 & 2011)
* 2A, 3A, 4A & 6A could all see repeat state champions. The most repeats their have been in a single season is 3. That happened in 1998-1999. One of those teams, the Salem Spartans, are still alive.
* In 4A West, Salem & Jefferson Forest are facing schools who weren't even in existence the last time the Spartans (2005) or Cavaliers (1993) won a state championship. John Champe's (11-0) first season was 2012 (they finished 0-10). Woodgrove (11-1) began in 2010 (2-8 record that season) and their lone loss this year was in the season opener to John Champe. Last year the Wolverines season ended in Salem with a 38-28 loss. Woodgrove led the Spartans 20-7 at halftime before a 2nd half Salem rally.
* Jamie Harless will be looking to do something that is not done every day, eliminate his alma mater from the high school football season. Harless, who was an All-American at Emory & Henry, will be facing his alma mater in Daleville on Friday night. Abingdon, who hadn't won a playoff game since 1996, has already won 2 defeating Rustburg and Northside on the road.
