High School Basketball Galore

The end of the high school basketball season is one of my favorite times of the year, and one of my least favorite. I love the playoffs, I love brackets and I love that for the week of the state championship, I get to be part of the insanity that takes place in Richmond with the Gameday crew at Gameday Magazine broadcasting the entire state tournament. The pitfall is when I have to broadcast high school basketball, I miss my other basketball love, the ODAC Tournament, which is taking place this weekend in Salem (I might make it up for the Semis and the Finals), if not, I'll make it for at least the finals on Sunday.

With all the madness of the Regional Tournaments and the upcoming state quarterfinals which are held at 6 VHSL "Super Sites" on Friday March 2nd and Saturday March 3rd, I did a little breaking down, hoping everybody can be a little educated. The Super Sites are
Virginia High School
Salem Civic Center

The Regional Semifinals have not concluded yet in A and AAA, however just looking at the State Quarterfinal sites, it looks like this.

D-1 Boys
3 of 4 sites are already determined. Virginia High, the Salem Civic Center and William & Mary will all host one game. The remaining game will either be played at the Siegel Center (if Amelia beats Luray in the Region B final) or JMU (if Luray beats Amelia in the Region B final)

D-1 Girls
2 of the 4 sites are already determined. Virginia High will host one game, and the Siegel Center will host one game. If the Region B champion is anyone other then Altavista (East Rockingham, Luray or Stonewall Jackson) the game will be at JMU. If Altavista wins the Region, the game will be at the Salem Civic Center. If Bland wins the Region C Championship, then another state quarterfinal will be at Virginia High. However, if any of the remaining teams (Galax, Bath Co., Covington) win Region C then that game will be at the Salem Civic Center.

D-2 Boys
2 of the 4 sites have already been decided. Virginia High will host one game and the Salem Civic Center will host one game. It is possible that the Salem Civic Center could get an additional game, if Dan River defeats George Mason in the Region B final. If George Mason beats Dan River, that game would be at Robinson Secondary School. The other site depends on the Region A final. If Sussex or Essex wins the Region A Championship, the game would be at the Siegel Center. However, if Lancaster or Nandua capture Region A gold, they would be playing host in Williamsburg at William & Mary.

D-2 Girls
Only one site has been locked in with that site being Virginia High. The other 3 depend on a few things. Virginia High could add another quarterifnal if Patrick Henry (Glade Spring) wins the Region C crown, otherwise that game would be at the Salem Civic Center. If Sussex or Northumberland win the Region A title, the game will be at the Siegel Center. If the Region A Champion is Northampton or Matthews, then the game is at William & Mary. Finally, the Region B Champion's super site could be one of three places. The Salem Civic Center would host a game, if Chatham wins the Region B title, if George Mason wins the Region B title, the game would be at Robinson Secondary School, if Stuarts Draft or Central Woodstock come out as the Region B Champ, then JMU adds a state quarterfinal.

AAA Boys
All sites are determined, teams just need to be filled in. Robinson Secondary School will get two games, William & Mary and the Siegel Center get one game each.

AAA Girls
All sites are locked execpt one. The Siegel Center, Robinson Secondary & William & Mary all have one game each. Robinson Secondary could add another if Potomac defeates William Fleming in the NW Regional Final. If Fleming comes out on top, add a game to the list of the Salem Civic Center.

So all in all, the way it stands right now, 26 of the 40 games have places to contest the games.
Robinson Secondary, Salem Civic Center, Siegel Center, Virginia High all have 5 games.
William & Mary has 4 games.
JMU has 2 games.

The Alvis projections think that everything will look like this, when it's all said and done.
Salem-9 games
JMU & Robinson Secondary-7 games
William & Mary and the Siegel Center-6 games
Virgina High-5 games
