Hoops Madness

Hoops madness is occuring in the final week of the 2007 calendar year, all throughout the commonwealth during the Christmas break for most high schools.

* On the girls side, in the Lady Terriers Classic in Vinton, tournament play got underway yesterday. Lord Botetourt defeated Cave Spring 39-33. In game two, Heritage fell to Northside, 47-44. Seminole District favorite, Brookville defeated Salem, 60-24. In the nightcap, Staunton River knocked off the host, William Byrd 55-30. Play resumes today with Heritage taking on Cave Spring, Willam Byrd will play Salem, Lord Botetourt takes on Northside and Brookville and Staunton River will tangle in the nightcap.

* Boys action takes place tonight in Altavista. The defending Region B champions will host Tunstall in tonight's nightcap after William Campbell and Region D contender, Castlewood tangle in the opener.

* Northside's annual Christmas Tournament opens today in Roanoke County. The host Vikings will play Franklin County in the nightcap. Liberty and Blacksburg open up play at 2:30. They will be followed by William Byrd and Martinsville. The dinner time tilt has Lord Botetourt playing Staunton River.

* The Heritage Pioneers look to snap their skid in the Daily Progress Tournament in Charlottesville. The Pioneers, who won the event several years ago, take on Western Albemarle today at 4:30. Monticello, Louisa County, Waynesboro and Culpepper are just some of the other teams participating in the event.

* The Danville Register and Bee Tournament will take place at Averett, today, tomorrow and Saturday. Chatham, G.W. Danville and Liberty Christian Academy are just some of the teams participating in the event.
